Flowers - a symbol of love
The beauty of flowers is that they have always been appreciated for their symbolism. They have such an important place at funerals because they can express how much the departed meant to us so much easier than words.
Florists can make tributes to any size or shape. Prices usually range from £10 for sprays to £25 to £200 for special shapes.
This means that you can reflect any particular hobby or interest in the floral tribute you choose. Alternatively, you may choose a more traditional wreath or bouquet reflecting your loved one's favourite flower.
Lilies, poppies or roses are the most traditional, but you should not restrict yourself to these. You may wish to choose less formal flowers such as marigolds or daffodils. Other flowers frequently used by florists for funeral tributes include freesias, chrysanthemums, anemones, tropical orchids, carnations, or even South African proteas. Modern cool-storage techniques and ease of transport now make it possible to have an orchid in winter, or any English flower out of season.
Before you make your final decision, bear in mind what you wish to do with the flowers after the funeral. You could have the flowers distributed to a hospital after they have been displayed at the graveside.
